Signs it is Time to Replace Your Gutters

kansas city gutter installation

Gutters are an essential part of your home; however, they are often overlooked. They provide protection by moving rainwater away from the structure, so it doesn’t cause any damage. Are you wondering if it is time to replace your gutters? If so, the information here will be beneficial.

The Gutters Have Visible Damage

In some cases, it will be possible for you to fix smaller issues with your home’s gutters. For example, if you see a small hole, you may be able to patch it. Additionally, if the gutters are becoming detached from your home’s roof, then you may be able to tighten the hardware.

However, if your gutters have extensive damage, this may require the installation of new gutters altogether. Some of the damage you may notice includes rust spots and corrosion. You may also see gaps in the seams between different parts of the gutters and you may even find broken fasteners and hardware along the ground under the gutters.

Water Damage in the Home

Regardless of if you have visible issues in the gutters or not, if you see any water damage, then it may be an indication that you need to have new gutters installed. If there are water puddles, land erosion or icy spots under your gutters, then this is another sign they aren’t working properly. Also, look at the side of your home. Any rivulets of paint or peeling paint may indicate that your gutters have started leaking.

If you notice mildew in your basement and you can’t find any other cause for it, then it may also indicate gutter issues. Put simply, if your gutters aren’t able to move the rainwater away from your home, then it may begin to accumulate at the base and get into the basement. This may result in musty odors, mildew and flooding.

You are Installing a New Roof

In theory, you can reinstall your old gutters when you install a new roof; however, it is always a better option to upgrade your gutters and your roof. In many situations, this may be absolutely necessary.

For example, if you are installing a metal roof, then it may be time to choose lower profile gutters. When snow begins to melt on a metal roof, it will usually come down in large chunks. That can damage wider gutters, but will usually arch over low profile gutters.

You Don’t Like How Your Gutters Look

In other situations, you may want to change your gutters because you are tired of the way they look. If you don’t like the shape or color of your gutters, then you may decide to install new ones for aesthetic purposes.

Keep in mind, the primary reason new gutters are installed is for functional purposes. However, you can also install them at any time you deem necessary. The best course of action is to call a professional service so they can determine if new gutters are needed
