How Do You Go About Designing Your Dream Outdoor Kitchen?

How Do You Go About Designing Your Dream Outdoor Kitchen?

Designing your dream outdoor kitchen involves more than picking a grill, some furniture, adding prep space and a few cabinets. No, this is going to be a DREAM outdoor kitchen—an area that exceeds your indoor kitchen (or at least rivals it).

Today’s custom outdoor kitchens include features, such as pizza ovens, wet bars, fireplaces, side burners, smokers, warming drawers and roasting spits, in addition to the fundamental grill, food prep station, sink, refrigerator and cabinets. Complete Home Concepts’ design team can take your outdoor kitchen as cozy and functional or as over-the-top and sprawling as you desire. Either way, your vision leads the design process and our team’s experience and know-how brings it all together.

First Things First, Which Cooking Appliances Do You Want to Use in Your Outdoor Kitchen?

Call it a grill or a barbecue, this is usually the way most outdoor chefs prefer to cook. After all, we’re in Kansas City, a place where barbecue reigns. The vast majority of homeowners definitely opt for a grill. Here are our favorite grill selections:

Blaze Grills are high quality products at a consumer-friendly price point. Whichever model you choose, know it’s manufactured to stand the test of time and backed by a solid warranty. Blaze has gas and charcoal grills, griddles, side burners and power burners to create the perfect outdoor cooking environment.

Hestan products are top of the line in terms of award-winning performance, innovative features and options for the outdoor kitchen of your dreams. Hestan grills and kitchen suite products are described as “The best, period” and “Sexy as hell.” Aspire by Hestan takes a just-ignite-and-grill approach. Aspire products come in cobalt, pink, aqua, orange, red and navy for a unique, luxury look.

Grills are a personal choice. We get it. If you have your own personal favorite, our team simply builds around your choice.

Beyond a grill, let’s decide on other appliances you’ll want. Depending on whether you intend to use your indoor kitchen, too, or design a full-service outdoor kitchen, other appliances to consider are:

·       Refrigerator (Sized for food and/or beverages)

·       Pizza oven (Yum and fun! Need we say more?)

·       Ceramic cooker, like Kamado (Grill, smoker and cooker in one)

·       Warming station/oven (Helpful when cooking for a group)

·       Roasting spit (Show off your culinary chops)

·       Ice makers and wine coolers (Keep drinks on ice or chilled to perfection)

Which Cabinetry and Layout Will Result in Best Functionality?

Choosing cabinetry and layout for an outdoor kitchen isn’t much different than it is for any indoor kitchen. And, if you find yourself irritated running back and forth for things in your indoor kitchen thanks to poor layout, this is your chance to fix that. Whether L-shaped, U-shaped or custom, our design team asks you questions about how you see yourself really entertaining and cooking. Your answers, along with the appliances you’ve chosen to include, will guide the layout.

Your intended use and entertaining style guide cabinetry selection. The more you see yourself using your outdoor kitchen, the more cabinetry for storage you might want. This will save you from the hassle of moving accessories and kitchen and dining ware indoors to out. However, we recommend choosing quality over quantity for a better experience and return on your investment. Remember, cabinetry should complement the overall design, but it must withstand extreme winter and summer temperatures in Kansas City.

Which Finishing Materials Will Complement the Look and Withstand the Elements?

Cabinetry base and countertops complete the basic foundation of your outdoor kitchen design. Your choice of bases includes stone, stucco or leaving it for your own finish. Browse stone styles and colors from the Model Stone, Semco or Coronado collections.

For countertops, your best options include granite and concrete. Granite is available in your choice of colors and finishes, then cut to your outdoor kitchen’s exact specifications. Super cast, high-grade concrete also comes in a variety of colors and is cut to fit.
